2008 Education Schedule

New Employee Orientations
The following Orientation programs are only offered to Palisades Medical Center employees. The Human Resource Department handles registration.

Hospitalwide Orientation
This one-day program is required for all newly hired personnel. The program introduces key administrative staff and reviews personnel policy and procedures. The class times are 8:30am-5: 00pm.

Clinical Orientation-RN/LPN
Full Time/Part Time

This program is designed to orient the newly hired registered nurse and other selected clinical staff to the patient care policies and procedures. The course includes classes, clinical experience and competency assessment. The length of the orientation is individualized to meet the needs of each new employee.

Per Diem/Agency
This program is designed to orient the newly hired per diem/agency registered nurse to the patient care policies and procedures. This course includes a self-learning manual, class, clinical experience and competency assessment.

Nursing Assistant/OBT/ORT/EMT Orientation
This one-week program is designed to orient experienced nursing assistants, OBTs, ORTs and EMTS to the patient care policies and procedures. The course includes classes, clinical experience and competency assessment.

Unit Secretary Orientation
This three-week program is designed to orient unit secretaries to the policies and procedures of their position. Classes include an introduction to the computer system. The manager arranges for clinical experience with a preceptor after successful completion of the program.

Specialty Nursing Orientations
Perinatal Orientation

This 12 week, self-paced program is offered to all newly hired RN’s for the obstetrical service. Contents include postpartum, nursery and labor and delivery. Prerequisites include Human Resources Orientation and Clinical Orientation.

Pediatric Workshop
This one-day program is for RNs who will be assigned to pediatric patients. Topics include growth and development, pharmacology and calculations, nursing assessments and emergency management.

Security Orientation
This two-day program is designed to orient all newly hired security officers to the policies and procedures of their position. Classes include Customer Service and Non-Violent Behavior Intervention.

BCLS Programs

Initial BCLS for Healthcare Providers
This course offers initial certification to healthcare providers. Content includes: one-man and two-man CPR, obstructed airway, bag-mask ventilation, child and infant CPR and AED. Simulated testing and written exam must be completed. Registration is required. Fee for non-PMC employees $75.00. All classes are 7:00am-3: 00pm

Renewal BCLS for Healthcare Providers
This program is offered for all that are currently BCLS certified. Renewal must be completed prior to the certification expiration date. All participants must successfully demonstrate skills and a written exam. Registration is not required. Fee for non-PMC employees is $45.00.

BCLS for Physicians
This program offers certification to all PMC physicians. Content includes: one-man and two-man CPR, obstructed airway, bag-mask ventilation, child and infant CPR and AED. Simulated testing and written exam must be completed. Registration is required. All classes will be held in the auditorium.

Heart Saver AED
Heart Saver is a course offered by the American Heart Association for healthcare staff. It requires a demonstration of skills in CPR and foreign body obstruction for adults and children. Class will be held in the auditorium. Registration is required. The fee for non-PMC employees is $75.00.

Renewal Heart Saver AED
This program is offered for all who hold a current Heart Saver AED card. Renewal must be completed prior to the expiration date. All participants must successfully demonstrate skills. Registration is required. Fee for non-PMC employees is $45.00.

NRP Course
NRP is a course offered by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association. It requires a written evaluation and demonstration of skills in initial newborn resuscitation, equipment, ventilation, chest compressions, endotracheal intubation and medication. Pre-registration is required. The fee for non-PMC employees is $ 125.00 (Initial), $65.00 (Renewal)

Advanced Life Support Courses
The following programs are sponsored by Englewood Hospital Training Center. Special arrangements are available for Palisades Medical Center employees. Registration is required; please call ex. 5244. For non-PMC staff, please contact the training center directly at 201-894-3443. Please note registration deadlines, which must be adhered to, in order for participants to receive materials in sufficient time to prepare for the course.

All courses except the * classes are held at Englewood Hospital from 9am-5pm.


ACLS Initial Provider Course
All classes are scheduled for 9am-5pm. Course pre-requisites include current AHA Health Care Provider Completion Card (CPR). Registration is required and the deadline is one week prior to the start date, indicated in parentheses.

Continuing Education Courses
The following courses will have continuing education credits supplied. In order to obtain CE credits you must attend 80% of the program. Palisades Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing education by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, Provider Number P198-12/07-10. NJSNA is accredited by the ANCC Commission on Accreditation of the American Nurses’ Association.


Preceptor Workshop
This one day 6.6 contact hours workshop prepares staff to precept newly hired employees. Content includes adult learning principles, competency assessment, assessment, providing feedback, clinical evaluation and documentation. Pre-requisites are one year’s experience and recommendation from their supervisor. Hours 8am-4pm. Fee for non-PMC staff $100.00.

Charge Nurse Workshop
This one day 6.8 contact hours workshop prepares the RN for assuming the role of charge nurse. Content includes adult learning principles, competency assessment, providing feedback, clinical evaluation and documentation. Pre-requisites are one years’ experience and recommendation from their supervisor. Hours 8am-4pm.

Critical Care Course
This six day 39.3 contact hour course utilizes a systematic format to address care of the critically ill patient. Systems included: cardio-vascular, pulmonary, GI/GU, endocrine, nervous, and renal. Pre-requisite basic EKG course. Hours 8am-4pm. Pre-registration is required, call ex. 5244. Fee for non-PMC staff $400.00

Basic Arrhythmia Course
This two day 10.9 contact hour course provides the nurse with basic knowledge in interpreting cardiac monitor strips. Content includes competency assessment, clinical evaluation and documentation. Hours 9am-5pm. Pre-registration is required, call ex. 5244.

IV Therapy Course
This one day 6.5 contact hour course provides the RN/LPN with the clinical knowledge and skills necessary so that he may practice IV therapy. Content includes competency assessment, clinical evaluation, documentation and demonstration of skills. Hours 7am-3pm. Pre-registration is required, call ex. 5244.

The Emergency Severity Index (ESI): A Five Level Triage System
This 8 hour, 7 contact hour course will be offered to PMC Emergency Room RNs who will be assigned to work in triage. Prerequisites include: One-year ER experience and recommendation from the supervisor. Pre-registration is required, call ex. 5244.

Trauma
This 8 hour, 6.9 contact hour course will be offered to PMC Emergency Room RNs. A minimum of 8 contact hours of education every two years in basic trauma assessment, intervention and stabilization is required. Hours 8am-4pm. Pre-registration is required, call ex. 5244.

Pediatric Assessment
This 3.3 contact hour course will be offered to all staff that administer care to pediatric patients. Pre-registration is required.

IV Drips
This 2.7 contact hour class will be offered to all Nursing staff in the ER, Medical-Surgical units, CCU.

Herbal Supplements and Drug Interactions
This one hour and thirty minute, 1.2 contact hour class provides the staff with the basic herbal classifications, actions and precautions, and food interactions. Hours 10am-11: 30 am. Pre-registration is required, call ex.5244. Fee for non-PMC staff $20.00.

Stroke Care
This one day, 7.2 contact hour class provides staff with information, recognition and treatment regarding stroke

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
This 2.4 contact hour class identifies the conditions for treatment, contraindications and nursing care.

JCAHO/OSHA Mandatory Education
This is a yearly requirement for all full time, part time, per diem employees, volunteers and contracted workers. Education requirements from JCAHO/OSHA are completed via the CareLearning program. Information will be provided in January.
